QUIZ ARTIST -_-

So for my Fundamentals of Digital Arts Class, we were given a 5 question quiz at the beginning of every class about an artist our professor went briefly over at the end of each class...

Now this class was on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:10 - 9:50 pm [Monday Night Football].  If you ever take a class with Natalie Bray, YOU MUST BE PROMPT & ON TIME! I learned that the hard way when I get locked out for showing up to class a couple of minutes late, missing a good portion of my quizzes.

It was the end of the semester and we were finishing up our last assignment for the class, which was creating this blog to showcase our work we did in the semester.  Throughout the class, Natalie called us up individually showing us our grade.  To my surprise, I was sitting at C+, due to my missed quizzes -___-

Being the great and understanding teacher she is, I was given a second chance to salvage my grade by writing a paragraph of the 7 quiz artist I missed.  so here it goes, enjoy.......

Ivanete Blanco is currently an assistant professor in graphic design at Old Dominion Univeristy.  As a graduate from Oklahoma Univeristy, Ivanete uses typography as her weapon of choice in the art world.  With a very clean and simple style, she lets the words tell a story by simply manipulating the size, space, shape and orientation into a clever design.  I really like the simple and subtle changes that make all the difference in her work.

Maggie Taylor is photographer and digital image artist that uses a very unique way to produce artwork.  By using a flatbed scanner and Adobe Photoshop, Maggie scans different objects to her computer compiling the images into different layers, producing one-of-kind stil life collage. A good portion of her work is enriched with different textures, colors and patterns captured by the use of the flatbed scanner.  MT's artwork kind of reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, with a fantasy and whimsical feeling to the piece.  I've noticed that a lot of her work consist of people from the 19th century placed into Maggie's composition. see her work for your self

David Carson aka the father of Grunge, is a graphic designer and well known for his magazine designs and creative use of typography.  In the 90's, Carson was seen as one of the most influential designers, due to his often imitated "dirty" aesthetics, beginning the era of grunge typography.  Surrounded by the bohemian beach culture that California had to offer, Carson's magazine designs got him the recognition he deserved even from those who weren't so fond of his work, calling it innovative.

Geoff McFetridge is an artist based out of Los Angeles, CA who is well diverse in all disciplines of art.  Going to school in Southern California, his style was heavily influenced by the urban pop culture he was surrounded by.  Geoff was already prominent in his craft, winning awards as a student and soon after became the art director of the famous underground Beastie Boys magazine Grand Royal.  Going through his work, GM work is very playful yet simple designs that work well with its overall theme.  His designs reminds me of the same work done for the Beatles, using flat cartoon graphics to tell a story without over doing the overall composition. check out his 3 sites. very interesting stuff.

Gardener Design is a design firm that focuses in branding for a wide variety of different companies and corporations.  With clean conceptual designs, Gardener has done an outstanding job with designing graphics that match what their clients are selling.  There is not a particular style this design company follows as they conform to what their customers are asking for.  I like the diversity of their portfolio.  Gardener Design shows how to really approach a client with an open mind and execute with incredible fashion.

Jiwon Lee, currently a professor/advisor at Old Dominion Univeristy, is an artist that has a way with words.  With a MFA thesis focusing on interactive typography, Jiwon Lee's approach with words and graphics gotten him a lot of recognition in the art community winning numerous awards. One of his works we discussed in class was a poster of Cats composed of different letters, numbers and words.  In class we talk about how his attention to detail, using the letter [i] for the eye of the cat was a nice touch to the poster.  see what I am talking about.
